I/We
I/we can create relationships where individuality and community are not mutually exclusive. Basil Johnston unites the one and the many in The Manitous, inside the Anishinaabe framework, where “the more self-reliant and free the individual, the stronger and better the well-being of the community.” Giving, receiving, and giving back. The community uplifts the individual, and in turn, the individual uplifts the community which gave them so much. Reciprocity - and the conception that relationships are not transactional, but instead exist in a framework of generosity and gratitude - is integral to this process. I/we are individual and in community simultaneously.
