All of this boils down to the same basic concept, and it is this one: Be interested in other people.

When Celeste Headlee argues that listening will help build relationships through conversation, I think of “Aaniin.” Celeste’s practice of open-minded listening and the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg practice of “Aaniin” feed into and instruct one another. When I am challenged to be a better listener, I am challenged to think “Aaniin” - whether the conversation is with a new person or an old friend, whether the conversation is for research or fun - and mean it. In tandem, they teach me how to open my mind to the fascinating, funny, tragic, lovely things that can be seen in and learned from other people.

By-Line: Hannah Ginsberg in conversation with Celeste Headlee and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson
