Alice Coltrane and Santana are Going Home
Whenever I listen to Alice Coltrane, I cry, a-lot. In her
work, Going Home, I couldn’t help but
feel her musical power strike me in my deepest heart and resound in my chest.
This is what Santana must’ve felt when he so delicately did a cover of this
same song on his guitar, years later. Though the melodies and titles are
replicated, what Going Home means to
the both of them is radically different, yet not so radical that they do not
recognize each other. It just feels different. The question I am left with is:
do they ever arrive?
