A culture as superior
[Tanya Tagag and thoughts on her argument]
I love Tagag’s point that some Canadians are hypocritical to
use their statement of support for animal welfare so as to criticize Inuit
people’s tradition of seal hunting. These critics show off how “civilized” they
are compared to Inuit people, when they probably consume meat everyday. Seal
hunting is only one of many practices in minority cultures looked down upon by members
of dominant cultures, who refuse to learn why these practices were born and
maintained. Similarly, in my country Vietnam, certain foreigners merely see our
people as subjects to observe, and easily exploit things they like about our
“exotic” culture while labeling the rest with “uneducated.”
